Milwaukee Marriott Project Approved

Project could add hundreds of jobs.

Today, the Milwaukee Common Council voted 13-2 to approve the proposed $50 million downtown Marriott project. This project will add hundreds of jobs in various sectors of the economy including construction and service employment positions that the city has been in need of.

The project is expected to take around 2 years to complete once it has begun. I think this is fantastic news which will give job seekers in Milwaukee, or better yet the state of Wisconsin - something to have faith in.

In the beginning of the economic downturn this type of project would have been almost unimaginable, but now, with a little more confidence - things seems to be taking off.

160 Jobs to Come to Milwaukee

A Macy’s is coming to the Milwaukee area during a Southridge Mall renovation. Spokespeople for the project say that it will bring 160 jobs to the area, and open sometime during the spring of 2012. Residents of the city can also expect to have new entrances, food court additions, and even a play place for kids to have fun at—which will surely be helpful in the summer of 2012, during the hot days and the park is just too hot. The actual job details themselves were not revealed, though they will likely include retail positions, janitorial work, and servers at the new food court eateries, and various other odd jobs.

Manufacturing is a Pretty Accessible Career Choice

My husband used to work in manufacturing, and while he was laid off, there seem to be many other manufacturing jobs available. Unfortunately most of them are a commute of at least an hour or longer away from us, making the trip there and back too much for what the jobs are worth. Still, these are the jobs that call back most often, and it’s no wonder why. They train you as soon as you start (usually paid training), don’t expect a lot of experience, offer decent pay for a basic skill set, and even have flexible shifts; most manufacturing plants that I know of have an early day, afternoon, and evening shift.

Job Market Tough for Teens in Minneapolis

For most of us, memories of our first jobs are pretty bittersweet. Sure, we may have made some friends, had good experiences, or even saved money for college; in my case, I paid my way through many school trips and bought what my sisters and I often needed for school. However, there’s often sour memories of disillusionment, being a “grunt” or “newbie,” or doing the work nobody else wants to do, too. For many teens in this economy, however, first jobs can be pretty hard to come by. Taking those trips, saving for college or paying for a car—or making those love/hate memories—is proving to be quite difficult for today’s teens. Teens in Minneapolis in particular are having a rough time seeking employment. Teens ages 16 to 19 in the city had an unemployment rate of 22% in the previous year, more than double what the city—and the very state itself—had on average throughout 2010.

Detroit Automakers Hope to Boost Economy

When it comes to Detroit and jobs, one usually conjures the auto industry in the mind. However, we all know how hard the world of transportation has been hit in the economy—after all, most people can’t afford new cars! That said, it looks like the situation is improving, and Detroit reports that they hope to not only boost their sales, but also their jobs by 2015. The Detroit Three are claiming that they’ll be able to increase the jobs in Michigan by a whopping 34% within the next four years. This translates to about 35,000 new jobs, which would be an ultimate blessing for the area. Do we need renewable transportation? Absolutely; we needed it decades ago. However, the Three might be able to work on just that—and they’ll need workers to do it. And even if they don’t, a job is a job, and with so many people hurting these days, 35,000 is a pretty big opportunity.
